jazyk (Slovak)

Where does "jazyk" come from?

The Slovak word 'jazyk' traces its origins back to a Proto-Indo-European root, *dn̥ǵʰwéh₂s, meaning 'tongue'. Over millennia, it evolved through Proto-Balto-Slavic and Proto-Slavic into the ancestor of modern Slavic languages, including Czech and Polish. Mirroring the conceptual shift seen in many other languages, this term for the physical organ gradually broadened to encompass the metaphorical sense of a 'language' or system of communication.
