gay (Scots)
Where does "gay" come from?
In Scots, gay developed from the adjective gay meaning “bright, lively, merry,” and then broadened into an adverb meaning “fairly” or “considerably.” That adjective came into Scots and English through Old French gai, likely from a Germanic source. Over time, the idea of something vividly cheerful or striking weakened into an everyday intensifier, giving Scots uses like gay meaning simply “quite” or “rather.”
