trys (Lithuanian)
Where does "trys" come from?
The Lithuanian word 'trys' descends from the Proto-Indo-European root *tréyes, meaning 'three'. This ancient form evolved into the Proto-Balto-Slavic term *tríjes before solidifying into its current Lithuanian spelling. Linguists have even speculated the original root may have poetically compared the number to the 'tip' or middle finger of a hand.
