soupçon (French)

Where does "soupçon" come from?

The French noun 'soupçon' travels from the Proto-Indo-European root '*spéḱyeti', meaning 'to be looking at'[6], which combines '*speḱ-' meaning 'to see, to look, to observe' with '*-yeti'[7]. This moved into Latin as the verb 'speciō'[5], formed with 'sub-' meaning 'under' to create 'suspiciō'[4], meaning 'suspect, mistrust'[2]. From there, the noun form 'suspectiōnem' developed in Latin[3], which was inherited into Old French as 'sospeçon'[1][2]. Finally, this became the modern French 'soupçon'[1], carrying the senses of 'suspicion; mistrust' as well as 'a hint, a tad, a little bit (of something)'.
