citole (French)
Where does "citole" come from?
The citole reflects a journey from the ancient Greek word for a chest or box, 'kithara', which eventually lent its name to a specific type of stringed instrument in Latin. After passing into Medieval Latin as 'citola', the term entered Old French to describe the popular necked lute that was a precursor to the modern guitar and violin family. This linguistic path shows how a general term for a container evolved into a specific name for a vessel of music.
