nia (English)
Where does "nia" come from?
The English particle 'nia' is borrowed directly from Hokkien[1]. In Hokkien, it corresponds to the character '爾' or '尔' (pronounced 'niā'), carrying the meaning 'only'[1]. Used sentence-finally, the term preserves this original function to downplay something as trivial or minor.
