volcano (English)

Where does "volcano" come from?

The English word 'volcano' was borrowed from the Italian 'vulcano'[1], which originally referred to Vulcano, a small volcanic island located in the Tyrrhenian Sea[1][2]. The island took its name from 'Vulcānus'[1][4], the Latin name for Vulcan, the Roman god of fire and metalworking[1]. Through this mythological and geographic association, the name of the fiery deity eventually became the universal term for erupting geological mountains[1].
