kheer (English)

Where does "kheer" come from?

The word 'kheer' traces back to the Proto-Indo-Iranian term *kšiHrám, which simply referred to 'milk.' Over time, it traveled through Sanskrit as kṣīrá and eventually into Hindi and Urdu, where it evolved to specifically identify the popular South Asian rice pudding. This culinary term is a linguistic bridge connecting ancient root words for dairy to the sweet, modern dessert we enjoy today.
