Where does "acai" come from?

The word 'acai' originates from the Proto-Tupi-Guarani term *wat͡saʔi, a language family native to South America. It entered the English language as a loanword via Brazilian Portuguese, where it refers both to the Euterpe palm tree and its distinctive dark purple fruit.
