Portal (English)

Where does "Portal" come from?

English "Portal" as a place name or surname ultimately comes from Latin porta, meaning "gate" or "entrance," and later passed through Old French portal/portail with the sense of a grand doorway. In English, the word kept this idea of an entryway or gateway, and that meaning was then borrowed as a name for towns, communities, and a surname. The place names likely reflect the image of a gateway or passage, rather than a separate linguistic source.
