Kashmir (English)
Where does "Kashmir" come from?
The English word 'Kashmir' was borrowed from Hindustani, which took it from Sanskrit 'कश्मीर' ('kaśmīra')[1]. This Sanskrit term is itself likely a contraction of older forms such as 'कश्यपमीर' ('kaśyapamīra'), meaning 'Kashyapa's lake', or 'कश्यपमेरु' ('kaśyapameru')[2][3][4][5].
Open questions
- The Sanskrit form is considered likely to be a contraction of older compound names, though this derivation remains probable rather than certain. [2] [3]
