Facebook (English)

Where does "Facebook" come from?

The name 'Facebook' originates from the term 'face book,' which historically referred to directory booklets given to students and staff at American universities to help members of a community get to know one another. The site evolved into its current identity from early iterations like 'Facemash' and 'TheFacebook,' eventually shedding the definite article to become the global social media giant we recognize today.
