aie (English)

Where does "aie" come from?

The word 'aie' traces back to the Old French exclamation 'haï,' which was used to express sudden pain or distress. It entered Middle English along with various other emotional interjections following the Norman Conquest. Over time, it survived as a variant of 'ay,' preserving the ancient sound of a sharp, instinctive cry.
