garden (English)

Where does "garden" come from?

The word 'garden' traces back to the Proto-Indo-European root *gʰerdʰ-, meaning 'to enclose.' It evolved through the Proto-Germanic *gardô, which also gave us the word 'yard', before passing into Anglo-Norman as 'gardin' and eventually reaching Middle English. Over time, its meaning shifted from a simple fenced enclosure to the cultivated spaces and common, ordinary things we describe as 'garden-variety' today.
